Peter’s parents are in an unusually good mood — they’ve just booked a holiday in Plainton. It’s not too far away, it’s enjoyable but not unforgettable, and yes, there’s a beach… but it’s not particularly beautiful. Peter doesn’t understand. Honestly, he’s bored. Really bored. So are his new friends: the silly, identical twins, Edward and Edwin; and the green-eyed, brave Madeleine. Then one day, they discover something weird about Plainton: children are absolutely banned from reading books. At first, this doesn’t seem like a big deal.
