Egadi Islands, Sicily. Fourteen-year-old Scilla works as a swordfish fisher on her uncle’s felucca, the Cariddi, a traditional Sicilian swordfish-hunting boat. Her father died at sea two years earlier, and her mother left Marettimo when Scilla was still a child, vanishing without explanation.

One day, during a perilous swordfish hunt, Scilla and Mansur — the lanzaturi who stands at the prow and casts the harpoon — haul a massive swordfish aboard. Hidden deep inside it, Scilla discovers a gold pendant engraved with the initials “A.D.”, containing a photograph of a woman holding a newborn. The image feels disturbingly familiar, raising questions Scilla has never dared to ask about her mother’s disappearance.

The mystery deepens when Scilla learns that the pendant was forged only months earlier in a jewellery shop in New York. How is that possible? Where has it been all this time — and what does it reveal about the woman who vanished from her life years ago?
