A tender and poetic story of an unexpected friendship, where a boy learns to see beyond silence and difference.

Recognising, understanding, and communicating with others is no simple matter: at times their inner world can seem dark and impenetrable, like the surface of a lake. Damiano is facing a loss far greater than he is. Maddalena is autistic. Damiano loves school, with his caring teacher and his classmates, but he prefers to stay a little apart, to take his own space and time. Maddalena does not behave like the others: she loves earthworms, digs holes, and pees in the wrong places. But above all, she is silent and enigmatic, just like the lake where Damiano goes fishing with his father. So, in the boy’s mind, his classmate becomes Silenzia of the Lake: a mysterious lake spirit with whom it is beautiful to be, quietly listening to one another.
