Tonka Uzu grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria. She has always enjoyed observing and drawing people and animals, especially children. After eight years in Bologna where she studied Art at DAMS, she moved to Cambridge, England. In 2011, she obtained a Master of Illustration for Children at the renowned Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University, where she now teaches as an Associate Lecturer. For younger children she has written and illustrated Olga and Olaf (special mention at the 2011 Macmillan Prize) and Olga and Olaf at the Beach (finalist for the Nati per Leggere prize in 2020). As an illustrator she has worked for publishers such as Daekyo/Scholastic Asia, Kettle’s Yard House and Gallery, Scallywag Press in the UK. Her work has been part of major international exhibitions such as the Illustrators Exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Illustrating Life IV in 2019 in Beijing and CICLA 2020 in Shanghai.
