Fabrizio Silei is an Italian author, artist, and sociologist, born in Florence in 1967. He has a diverse background, having graduated from the College of Arts and holding a bachelor’s degree in Political Sciences. Silei has dedicated much of his career to exploring themes of identity and memory, working extensively in research institutes and collecting personal narratives from war survivors, former prisoners of Nazi camps, and local farmers in Tuscany.
In the literary world, Silei is renowned for his children’s and young adult books, often infused with strong social messages. One of his most notable works, L’autobus di Rosa (Rosa’s Bus), inspired by the story of Rosa Parks, has been translated into multiple languages and adapted for theater performances in Italy, supported by Amnesty International. Silei’s contributions have been recognised with several prestigious awards. In 2012, he received the Premio Andersen for Best Book in the 9-12 years category for Il bambino di vetro. He was honoured again in 2014 as the Best Writer by the same award, praised for his versatile storytelling that spans humor, short stories for young readers, illustrated albums, and adolescent novels, all marked by a commitment to civil engagement and high-quality writing.
Beyond writing, Silei is an accomplished artist, graphic designer, and illustrator. In 2014, he founded “L’Ornitorinco Atelier” near Collodi, Tuscany, a creative workshop where he focuses on narrative projects for children and families.
His recent works include Hikikomori, co-authored with Ariela Rizzi, which won the Premio Bancarellino in 2024. Silei continues to influence both literature and art, engaging audiences with his profound storytelling and creative endeavours.
